Due to jump at 5:10pm (AEDT) as Randwick Race 9, this yearâs $3 million Group 1 The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) features a quality field of 15 hopefuls.
Red hot favourite in Doncaster Mile betting at Ladbrokes.com.au this Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival is the Chris Waller-trained Street Cry mare Winx at an odds-on price of $1.90 to get the job done for the punters.
She is the shortest-priced Doncaster Mile favourite in over 90 years, jumps from barrier 11 and shoots for her ninth win on the trot.
The five-time Group 1 winning four-year-old is flying and will be very hard to defeat as she has her final lead-up into the autumnâs richest race Saturday week, the $4 million Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) back at Randwick.
Waller has won five editions of the Doncaster Mile including the past three straight and also saddles-up the second best in betting this season with his defending champion Kermadec ($8) who was runner-up to Winx last start in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m).
The last of the single figure hopes looking to score an upset Doncaster Mile result is then the Ciaron Maher-trained mare Azkadellia ($9) drawn one outside the favourite in barrier 12 with the raceâs most successful jockey Glen Boss booked for the 50kg light weight.
So will Winx win the Doncaster Mile and make history again with her 56.5kg allocation or is there a massive boilover on the cards from the likes of the recent Villiers Stakes winner over the track and distance Happy Clapper ($11), or even the John OâShea-trained Bow Creek ($14)?
1st
#3 Winx ($1.90)
Winx is odds-on but is still better than bank interest to make the history books again with a win here. Sheâs out to set a new weight-carrying record for a mare in the Doncaster, but they havenât found the bottom of her yet. She did the George Ryder without a worry and has a stellar Randwick (8-4-3-0) and mile (4-3-1-0) record so sheâll only improve off that. Sheâs the current Australian turf queen and wonât have her crown knocked off just yet.
2nd
#1 Kermadec ($8)
Kermadec was the forgotten horse in the George Ryder, and while he wasnât exactly threatening his star stablemate on the line, the run was very good as he looks to defend his Doncaster Mile title. He is the equal 57kg top weight this year and thatâs a tough ask, but heâs in-form and should be peaking third-up so can finish in the money again for Sydneyâs premier trainer.
3rd
#10 Happy Clapper ($11)
So many livewire chances for the final placing, but Happy Clapper in gate eight carrying only 50.5kg is pretty hard to go past. Jockey Brenton Avdulla is in top form and has the mount on Pat Websterâs Teofilo five-year-old who comes off a George Ryder fifth, but who will relish the mile and returning to Randwick to drop back from the 59kg last start at WFA.
