Chris Waller’s seemingly bottomless mare Winx will jump the shortest priced favourite in nearly a century when she starts odds-on in the Doncaster Mile 2016 at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

One of 15 final acceptors for this year’s $3 million Group 1 The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m), Street Cry four-year-old Winx is at a short $1.85 in the latest markets at Ladbrokes.com.au to post her ninth straight win and secure her sixth Group 1 success.

Drawn in gate 11 with Hugh Bowman retaining the ride, this campaign Winx has won all three of her starts including the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) by an easy one and a half lengths on March 19.

She now attempts a double last achieved by Vision And Power (2009) with the Doncaster win in her sights for the race’s six-time winning trainer Waller.

Waller prepared Kermadec (2015) for victory in the race 12 months ago making it three straight wins with Sacred Falls going back-to-back in 2013-14.

All three of those Waller-trained Doncaster Mile winners scored an upset with the last favourite to salute for the punters being the Gai Waterhouse-trained More Joyous (2012), who was also the last mare to beat home the boys in the classic.

Just one other runner joins Winx under $10 in the Doncaster Mile odds with Waller’s defending champion Kermadec ($7.50) out to close the gap following his second in the George Ryder.

He ran third in the same lead-up last Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival before the win and was impressive although well-beaten by his star stablemate this season.

A now four-year-old son of Teofilo, Kermadec should be peaking third-up off two nice runs this time in looking to add to his stellar record over the Randwick mile that stands at two wins and two seconds from four runs here over 1600m to date.

He is also drawn well in barrier three with Zac Purton, who won aboard Sacred Falls (2014), retaining the ride.

The next best in betting at $11 each for the upset are then Happy Clapper and Azkadellia drawn in barriers eight and 12 respectively.

Patrick Webster’s gelding Happy Clapper has a strong mile record (3-2-0-1) and won December’s Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) at Randwick.

Fourth in the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) two back he comes off a George Ryder fifth carrying 59kg at weight-for-age.

The handicap conditions of the Doncaster see him drop right back to just 50.5kg making him a genuine light-weight hope with Brenton Avdulla continuing his association with the horse.

Azkadellia is the next best fancied mare aside from Winx in this year’s Doncaster Mile field and the race’s six-time winning jockey Glen Boss is on her back.

Boss rode Doncaster Mile winners Sprint By (1996), Private Steer (2004), Racing To Win (2006), Haradasun (2007), Triple Honour (2008) and Kermadec (2015) last year giving him the most wins in the race of any jockey.

His mount this autumn, Shinko King four-year-old Azkadellia, is a Melbourne raider racing in Sydney for just the second time.

Third to Politeness in Flemington’s Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) in the spring, she’s run top two in her three runs this preparation including the Group 3 Mannerism Stakes (1400m) win in late February at Caulfield.

She raced in Sydney for the first time last start when a close second to Peeping in the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) so has the experience this way of going dropping back three kilos to the 50kg minimum on the weekend.

The other best fancied are market mover Bow Creek ($15 into $13) for John O’Shea and First Seal ($17) drawn the rails with Tommy Berry riding the John Thompson-trained Group 1 winning mare who ran fourth in the George Ryder.
